Andrea Valadez: Why HSU’s DMSc is Perfect for PAs

Andrea Valadez, a gastroenterology hospitalist physician assistant (PA) in West Texas, has always been passionate about medicine. After graduating from Yale University in the summer of 2024, she stepped into her first role as a provider, working in both a hospital and a clinic setting.
Recognizing that the landscape was changing for advanced practice providers, Andrea felt motivated to start a program that would help her become more competitive in the workforce. That’s when she discovered the Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program at Hardin-Simmons University, designed specifically for working PAs looking to enhance their leadership, research, and clinical practice skills.
“I am a native of West Texas and love that there is a DMSc program located here,” said Andrea. “I toured HSU as a PA school applicant and was drawn to the culture and Christian foundation. While I did attend PA school elsewhere, I was excited to see that HSU was offering a DMSc program.”
As a new PA juggling two practice settings and single parenthood, Andrea needed a program that fit into her life rather than dictate it. HSU’s DMSc program did exactly that. She has been able to complete coursework on her own time, ensuring she never misses precious moments with her children while still advancing her career.
“My professors are very accessible, and weekly discussions with classmates mean that we are in contact despite the distance between us,” said Andrea. “Being a part of this program has pushed me to explore evidence-based medicine and the process of publication. I have already grown in confidence in these areas, and the feedback I receive is constructive and encouraging.”
Through her current project—researching the rising incidence of colorectal cancer in young adults—she is gaining hands-on experience in scholarly research, a skill that will serve her well in both clinical practice and academia. The program’s structure also allows students to tailor their projects to their specialties, ensuring that their education directly impacts their careers.
“I see this degree affording me opportunity. I can’t be sure what the future holds, but I know I want options. Having a DMSc from HSU gives me that,” said Andrea.
To those considering HSU’s DMSc program, Andrea offers the following advice.
“Time is going to pass by either way, so you may as well make the most of it. This program was designed for working PAs, and it functions as such. While I was initially concerned about time management, I have found that this program fits perfectly into my already busy life, ensuring that I have the education necessary to walk through any open door in the future.”
